Seamless connection, much easier than the other eSIM I've used. Will use again next time!

One NZ roaming in Japan: costs, data, and how to save
A plain-English guide to the One NZ Daily Roaming, what you'll pay, and a cheaper alternative if you want one
KiwiSim eSIMs from $3.90/day

What One NZ charges
One NZ Daily Roaming
$10per 24 hours
You use your existing One NZ plan's data allowance overseas — there is no separate daily cap on the pass itself.
- Calls and texts
- Calls and texts within Japan and back to NZ are included in the daily pass.
- Hotspot
- Included — the daily allowance can be tethered to other devices.
- After the allowance
- Once you exceed your plan's Max Speed Data allowance, data drops to a maximum of 1.2 Mbps on Endless plans. Other plans need to purchase additional data via Flexi Data.
- Zone
- Japan is in One NZ’s extended Asia-Pacific roaming zone. Other regions can attract higher rates or PAYG charges.
- Activation
- The pass activates automatically the first time you use your One NZ SIM in Japan. To avoid any charge, switch off "Data roaming" on your One NZ SIM before you fly, or disable roaming inside the One NZ app.
One NZ's Roaming Daily Pass activates automatically when your phone connects to a partner network in Japan. You're billed a flat daily fee on any calendar day you use mobile data, calls, or texts — even a single inbound text can trigger the pack.

Definitely my to go to eSIM😬
We travel from Perth to Melbourne by road. We had data connection everywhere you would expect like roadhouses on Nullarbor. Would be handy if there was some way to receive Message. As we found camp ground sent after hours check in info on message.
Great price and very easy setup. I will use again.
Super easy & great price!
First time using an esim. It was so simple to install that I thought I did something wrong 😅. And super easy to use.
Was brilliant easy to use
Super easy to set up! And affordable which was awesome.
Was a little nervous, as the company was new, but everything worked easily and simply, Used it for a week in the Gold Coast. Highly recommend.
Really easy to use and no issues with connectivity. Love that its nz owned. Only gave 4 stars because I manually chose 8 days of coverage however on the last day it stopped working.
Did all we needed for our short trip.
Simple, easy and chepaer than roaming packages. Highly recommend
Questions, answered
How is the daily cost for One NZ calculated?
One NZ's roaming products vary by data allowance and pack duration, so they aren't always priced as a flat daily fee. To compare like-for-like with KiwiSim's unlimited daily plan — which gives you around 1GB of data per day at top speed — we worked out what you'd actually pay One NZ to get roughly the same data each day at their published rates. That's the figure used in the chart and tables on this page.
Is One NZ roaming worth it in Japan?
One NZ's Daily Pass is convenient but expensive on longer trips. A few days is fine, but past about three days the maths usually favours a KiwiSim eSIM — same local 5G/4G coverage, unlimited daily data, and a much lower per-day price.
How do I turn off One NZ roaming before I travel?
In the One NZ app, turn International Roaming off, and in your phone's settings switch "Data roaming" off for the One NZ line. Doing both is safest. You can still receive calls and texts on your NZ number — disabling roaming just stops the Daily Pass from triggering.
Can I use One NZ and KiwiSim at the same time?
Yes — and that's the recommended setup. Keep your One NZ SIM active for calls and texts on your NZ number (with data roaming off so you don't get charged), and use the KiwiSim eSIM for all your data in Japan.
Does One NZ charge for incoming calls in Japan?
Incoming calls and texts are included in the Daily Pass, but they'll trigger the daily charge if you receive them while the pass is active. With roaming switched off, calls go straight to voicemail and you avoid the fee.
What happens if I turn off cellular data and only use my eSIM?
If your One NZ SIM has roaming disabled and you use only the KiwiSim eSIM for data, One NZ won't charge you the Daily Pass. Just be aware that receiving a call or text on your NZ number can still trigger it — for full safety, switch off roaming entirely on the One NZ line.
Will I get charged by One NZ if I install a KiwiSim eSIM?
No — KiwiSim is a separate carrier connection running alongside your One NZ SIM. Installing a KiwiSim eSIM has no impact on your One NZ account or billing.
Does One NZ roaming work on all phones?
Yes — One NZ roaming works on any phone that already takes your One NZ SIM. KiwiSim requires an eSIM-compatible phone (most iPhones from XS / 2018 onward, and most flagship Androids from 2020 onward).
