How do I check my data usage?

The easiest way to see how much data you have left is on your KiwiSim order page. It shows the data you've used, the data you have left, and when your plan ends. You can also top up from the same page if you're running low.

How to find your order page

  1. Open the email we sent when you bought your eSIM. The subject is "Your eSIM is ready to install".
  2. Tap View Your Order.
  3. Scroll down to Data Usage. You'll see how much data you have left, and how much you've used.

If you made a KiwiSim account, you can also log in and go to My Orders.

The data usage updates every 2-3 hours, so it can be a little behind if you've just used a lot. We'll also email you when you've used 80% of your data, and again if you run out.

Why not use my phone's settings?

Your phone keeps its own data count, but it often gets it wrong for travel eSIMs. It counts from the last time the numbers were reset, which might be months ago. It can mix in data from your New Zealand SIM. And it doesn't know how much data your plan came with.

Your order page gets its numbers straight from the network, so it's the one to trust.

How to top up

On your order page, tap Top up with more data under your data usage and pick a top-up. It goes onto the eSIM you already have, so there's nothing new to install. Your extra data is ready in a few seconds.

You can top up any time while your plan is active. Once a plan has expired, you'll need to buy a new one.

Which apps are using the most data?

Your phone can't tell you how much KiwiSim data you have left, but it's good at showing which apps are using it.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings and tap Mobile Service. On some iPhones this is called Mobile Data or Cellular.
  2. Scroll down to see a list of your apps and how much data each one has used.
  3. To stop an app using mobile data, switch it off in this list. It will still work on Wi-Fi.
  4. At the start of your trip, scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics. The list will then only count data from your trip.

On Android, go to Settings → Connections → Data Usage → Mobile Data Usage. Select your KiwiSim eSIM at the top to see the apps that use the most data. On some Android phones this is under Settings → Network & Internet instead.

Video, maps, and photo backups to iCloud or Google Photos use the most data. Turning on Low Data Mode on iPhone, or Data Saver on Android, helps your data last longer.
